Elementary school creates outdoor classroom
HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - Roy G. Elementary School in Hazard has a new outdoor classroom.
The unused space was once just dirt and grass between parts of the school.
Principal Derek Allen said they wanted the area to have a purpose.
“We just really wanted to turn into something special that we can use in an instructional way and increase our school culture too. So, we took a vacant alley between two buildings, which was a dirt path, and we turned it into what’s called an umbrella alley,” he said.
With the space covered in colorful umbrellas, tables, and a whiteboard, Allen said it would serve as a place for teachers to change up the scenery.
“And it’s an outdoor classroom setting that I think our kids are going to love, we’re really excited about it,” Allen added.
Allen said he hopes the space will boost the creativity of the students.
