Former Scotland captain Stuart Hogg has pleaded guilty to a domestic abuse charge against his ex-wife, and will be sentenced later this year.

The current Montpellier full-back has been arrested three times in relation to the case, with the most recent one in early September.

Stuart Hogg pleads guilty to domestic abuse

Hogg, 32, admitted to ‘shouting, swearing and acting in an abusive manner’ towards his former partner, as well as repeatedly tracking her movements and sending messages of an alarming and distressing nature. The court also heard he sent over 200 messages in just a couple of hours.

Hogg also admitted a single charge of ‘repeated abusive behaviour’, and engaged in ‘a course of conduct which caused her fear or alarm’ over a five-year period.

The court also heard Hogg regularly shouted and swore at his now ex-wife whilst living in both Hawick and Exeter – during his time at Exeter Chiefs.

The charge against him also involves how Hogg ‘monitored his wife’s movements through the Find My Phone app’ after their split in 2023.

Sheriff Peter Paterson has deferred the sentencing until early December to await reports, including a restriction of liberty report. He has also been placed on bail until the sentencing, when Hogg’s legal team can provide full mitigation.

During his playing career, Hogg won over 100 caps for Scotland and also went on three British and Irish Lions tours. He also won a PRO14, Premiership and Champions Cup title during his stints at Glasgow Warriors and Exeter.

Despite retiring in the build-up to the World Cup last year, he made a dramatic U-turn earlier this year as he returned to the game after penning a two-year deal with Montpellier. Hogg has since made five appearances for the French club, scoring one try.
