Storm Reid kicked it off, saying, “I just wanna wish you the best of luck at the WTA Finals. I can’t believe this is your third year in a row. I am so proud of you; you inspire me. Your hard work, your work ethic, your determination, it’s something that is truly special.”

As Gauff heads into her third WTA Finals, she boasts an impressive record of 50 match wins this season, with a 50-16 record. She secured two singles titles at the Auckland Open and the China Open this year. Although she didn’t snag a second Grand Slam singles title, Gauff reached the semifinals at both the Australian and French Open. On October 30th, Stubbs discussed Gauff’s chances at the WTA Finals this year. She highlighted the American’s performances so far have been impressive and truly showcased her potential to compete at the highest level. Pointing that Gauff’s backhand is on par with the best players on tour. However, she pointed out a crucial factor for Gauff’s success,

“If she serves less than six double faults in her matches, no matter what match she plays, she will win the tournament.” Stubbs made it clear that Gauff’s performance heavily relies on her serve. “Her serve is as big as anybody’s on tour,” she noted. But added that Coco needs to get her serves in play and avoid handing points to her opponents. Drawing from her own experiences, Stubbs warned that Gauff’s serve could be a double-edged sword.

In the semi-final of the Wuhan Open against Aryna Sabalenka, Gauff started strong but faltered. Notably committing a staggering 21 double faults and Stubbs highlighted that this inconsistency was pivotal. Coco would have the upper hand if she paid attention in this area, as Rennae stated, “You’re serving 20-21 double faults in a match and you lose 6-3 or 6-4 in the third. You get your serve and you win.”
