Concerns Rising Over Coco Gauffs WTA Finals Journey as Iga Swiatek Stands
in Her Way as a Big Hurdle
Despite sensational win over Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff faces major concerns as she gears up to face Iga Swiatek in WTA Finals

What a game for Coco Gauff! The American sensation kicked off the WTA Finals with style, showing us yet again why she’s one of the most exciting players on tour. Gauff’s determination and resilience were on full display, thrilling fans with each point and keeping her edge sharp in every rally. But as she basks in this first big win, a looming question has fans buzzing: can she keep this streak alive against a powerhouse like Iga Swiatek?

The American tennis sensation played her first match at the WTA Finals against compatriot Jessica Pegula and baffled her throughout the match. She ensured complete dominance and handed a sensational defeat in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. She also expressed immense happiness over her performance against a tough contender like Pegula.

Speaking after winning the match, Gauff said, “I thought we both were playing high level.” She added, “I just think I was able to break through on the more important points.” But now, her next match is against a more formidable opponent, Iga Swiatek and fans are worried if she would be able to continue her sensational gameplay.

Commenting on a video posted by the official X account of WTA, several fans highlighted the challenges that might take against Gauff. They also highlighted that despite her remarkable performance lately, the 20-year-old’s journey ahead might not be easy given her past records against Swiatek.

Fans express concern for Coco Gauff ahead of her clash against Iga Swiatek

Taking to X, one user wrote, “A huge win because Gauff was 1-4 against Pegula! Now she plays Swiatek, Coco is 1-11 against Iga!” highlighting the stats of the American star. Remember, before this match, Gauff and Pegula faced each other 5 times with Pegula winning 4 of them, including their last three. Gauff successfully managed to break this streak and made a remarkable return against Pegula. But now, her next match is against the Pole, who has defeated Gauff in 11 of their 12 encounters. In fact, the only time Swiatek lost against Gauff was in the 2023 Cincinnati semi-finals. Hence, her road ahead is not expected to be easy.

Responding to the post, another user wrote, “Coco Gauff defeated the weak Jessica Pegula 6:3, 6:2 today. On Tuesday, the match is Iga Świątek – Coco Gauff. After the 1st round #WTAFinals those tennis players who played well in the Far East are leading in the groups. No surprise.”

Interestingly, Gauff ‘s victory against Pegula was indeed unique given the fact that she broke some great records. Pegula was on a 14-match winning streak against compatriots and did not lose a single match against them after her defeat to Madison Keys in the US Open last year. Besides breaking this streak, she also managed to bag her biggest Top 10 victory of the season. Her victory over the No. 6-ranked Pegula came a year after beating a No. 6-ranked Marketa Vondrousova at last year’s WTA Finals. But concerns about her next match continued to flow.

Iga Świątek vs. Coco Gauff – episode XIII The American won her match without any problems, but it must be admitted that Pegula played terribly today. I’m curious about the match between IŚ and CG. The Pole will be the favorite, even with such a break (if only because of H2H), but Gauff may surprise,” wrote another user highlighting the head-to-head tally again. For the unversed, Swiatek’s domination has also been acknowledged by Gauff in the past. Speaking ahead of their clash at the French Open this year, Gauff said, “I definitely think I have to find a better way to play her than the last times.” She also highlighted Swiatek’s reign over the clay courts and said, “I think she’s playing great tennis here, so it’s going to be a challenge.”

One more user highlighted the challenges for Gauff and despite praising her subtly, they established a clear preference for Swiatek. “Only Swiatek can defeat Gauff right now,” the user wrote. Gauff has been in remarkable form lately. Entering the Asian swing, she emerged victorious in the China Open and was the semifinalist in the Wuhan Open. She has won 10 of her last 11 matches on the hard courts proving her mettle. But her record against Swiatek comes as a major roadblock for fans who are failing to back her despite lauding her gameplay.

Yet another fan simply took a dig at both players and wrote, “Whose forehand is worse, Coco Gauff or Iga Swiatek ??” For now, it would be interesting to see if the American sensation can continue her wining streak and clinch a remarkable victory to improve the head-to-head tally.
