Electric BMW iX1 Teaser Confirms Late 2022 Debut And A 272Mile Range
The electric variant of the next-generation BMW X1 shows its face

BMW has confirmed that the iX1 – the fully-electric variant of the next-generation X1 – will arrive by the end of the year, shortly after the debut of the ICE-powered model which will also be available as a plug-in hybrid. The automaker published the first teaser of the crossover revealing the design of its front end.

The iX1 outline shows aggressive headlights with angular LED graphics, a large grille with connected kidneys, and vertical bumper intakes highlighted in blue – similar to the facelifted iX3. This is also a preview for the ICE-powered BMW X1 which is expected to share most of its body panels with the iX1, minus the EV-specific features on the front and rear bumpers.

We mirrored the official teaser for a better look in BMW iX1’s face

Speaking at the BMW Annual Conference, Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, said that the iX1 will be coming at the end of 2022. He revealed that the X1 / iX1 will inherit the latest connectivity technology alongside the flagship XM, and the upcoming facelifts for the 3-Series and the X7.

Indeed, as we have already seen from spy photos, the X1 / iX1 will feature a digital dashboard sharing the Curved Display and the Operating System 8 with the mechanically related 2-Series Active Tourer. BMW describes the iX1 as “spacious yet compact” confirming the rumors about an increased cabin space compared to the current X1.

Spy photos of the BMW X1 and iX1 have left little to the imagination.

Although we don’t know the power output of the fully electric powertrain, it has been confirmed that the BMW iX1 will be equipped with the fifth-generation eDrive technology. We can also see the forecast values for the electric range which is expected to be between 256-272 miles (412-438 km) in WLTP standards.

The Bavarian automaker will be offering a variety of powertrain types for its entry-level SUV that resides in the “high-volume premium compact segment”, following the same strategy with the larger X3 and iX3. Thus, the third generation of the X1 will be available with gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric powertrains thanks to the flexibility of the updated UKL/FAAR platform that will be used in all compact models from BMW and MINI – including the Countryman. It is also rumored that the X1 will get a hotter version – likely called the M35i – that has been spied with quad tailpipes, beefier brakes, and larger diameter wheels.

BMW is set to expand its range with 15 fully electric models in 2022, covering 90 percent of the current segments. The next step will be the Neue Klasse EV-dedicated platform that will be arriving in the middle of this decade.
