Growing up with Full House and fond memories of Bob Saget as Danny Tanner

Growing up with Full House and fond memories of Bob Saget as Danny Tanner
If Full House were a band, then Bob Saget sung the soundtrack to my childhood, and to the childhood of countless others.

OPINION: If you were a child of the late 80s and early 90s, a few things stand out as quintessential memories. Florescent socks, snap bracelets and kung fu shoes.

And coming home from school to the familiarity of perhaps the world’s most loved single Dad – Danny Tanner.

Whether you loved it or hated it, most of us grew up with Full House, and Bob Saget was a permanent fixture on the old box TV in our homes.

I remember my daily ritual well. I’d arrive home from school, grab a snack (and eat it on a towel so Mum wouldn’t find crumbs and know I’d eaten in the lounge) then sit down to the Tanner Family and their adventure of the day.

There’s something about 90s nostalgia that runs deep, and something about Full House that epitomises that nostalgia in a way that few things do. The Tanners were the kind of family that everyone wanted. They made San Francisco town houses instantly recognisable.

They had a cool, rebellious uncle in Jesse and a goofy, fun uncle in Joey. They laughed and joked and cried and at the end of the day – despite the dramas and the arguments and the tears, Danny Tanner made everything ok with a joke, an inspirational talk and one of his famous hugs.

Full House was to us 90’s kids what Friends became to the world in later years.

The show only ran for eight seasons, from 1987 to 1995, but those 192 episodes brought with them a lifetime of childhood television memories.

We grew up with that family to the point that we truly knew them. We welcomed them into our homes every day. We knew their secrets and their fears. We empathised with DJ’s teenage insecurities and we understood Stephanie’s middle child frustrations.

And we knew that, through it all, Danny Tanner would figure it out and have the right answers.

We laughed with them and cried with them and we knew their catchphrases. There were few kids that weren’t familiar with Full House – even if they didn’t watch it – and most of us grew up with truly fond memories.

Like most nostalgic shows – I couldn’t watch it when I tried years later. And I lasted less than a full episode of the recent Fuller House. But I still look back on the show with a smile.

I grew up with Danny Tanner every day. I grew up with his love of cleaning, of cheesy jokes and of his family – and for that I’m grateful.

If Full House were a band, then Bob Saget sung the soundtrack to my childhood, and to the childhood of countless others.

We loved him for his big heart and his familiarity. As he famously asked one episode, “Am I the raddest, baddest Dad a kid ever had?”

Maybe, maybe not. But he was certainly one of the most memorable.
