Jodie Whittaker faces Daleks, Cybermen and The Master in her 'epic' final Dr Who episode
Jodie Whittaker will face some of her fiercest foes in an “epic and emotional” final outing as the Time Lord for the BBC Centenary special of Doctor Who.
The Master, Daleks and Cybermen will all appear together in the feature-length episode “Legend of the Sea Devils” for the first time since the show returned to BBC one in 2005.
A trailer for the show also revealed the surprise return of former Doctor Who companions from earlier eras: Janet Fielding as Tegan Jovanka, companion to both the Fourth and Fifth Doctors and Sophie Aldred as Ace, companion to the Seventh Doctor.
Chris Chibnall, Showrunner, said: “Jodie’s final feature-length story contains a plethora of treats and surprises for audiences and fans, not least the return of two of the most beloved companions in the show’s history.
“They’ll be helping the Doctor fight on three fronts, against her deadliest enemies: the Master, Daleks and Cybermen, in one huge story.
“For the BBC’s Centenary, we’ll be celebrating the past, present and future of Doctor Who, in a fittingly thrilling, epic and emotional send-off for the Thirteenth Doctor.”
Whittaker took over from Peter Capaldi as the thirteenth Doctor in 2017, becoming the first woman to take on the role, with her initial series broadcast in 2018.
Her tenure as the Time Lord comes to an end as the BBC celebrates 100 years of broadcasting and her replacement is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
For her final adventure, she will be pitched against iconic adversaries the Daleks and the Cybermen as well as arch enemy The Master, played by Sacha Dhawan, who last appeared in series 12’s final episode “The Timeless Children”.
But she will also have past companions of the Doctor by her side.
Janet Fielding, companion to Tom Baker and Peter Davison as the Doctor, said: “In some ways it was a very different experience to what it was like when I finished recording in 1983, but in many ways it was very similar.
“It was so lovely to be a working member of the Doctor Who family again!”
While Sophie Aldred, companion to Sylvester McCoy as the Time Lord, said: “It’s been quite a challenge to have such a big secret to keep, even from my family, and I couldn’t be more thrilled and excited to have been asked back.”
Also confirmed to be taking to the screen for the Doctor’s epic battle for survival are Vinder (Jacob Anderson) and Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave).
Details of the episode, due to air this autumn, were revealed in a short trailer following the Easter special.
