US stocks chalk up another tumultuous day of trading

The S&P 500 sheds 1.2 percent and the Nasdaq slides 2.3 percent in “jaw-dropping” sellpoff.
The Dow Jones industrial average closed at 34,297.73, down 67.77 points or 0.2 percent, after staging another monstrous comeback, at one point surging almost 1,000 points above its midmorning low. The broader S&P 500 index closed at 4,356.45, down 53.68 points or 1.2 percent. And the technology-rich Nasdaq lost 315.83 points, or 2.3 percent, to end at 13,539,29.
