This weekend the Downtown Detroit Partnership is hosting an art-filled Earth Day celebration. Friday kicked off the three day affair with remarks from Chris Polk, the program manager and Beacon Park manager for DTE Energy.

The celebration invites the community to learn about sustainable living with educational sessions.

Guests had the opportunity to plant flowers and receive a guided tour of the grounds with the head gardener Ed Ashcraft.

Polk says visitors will be learning from one of the best in the landscaping field. “Ed is a professional landscaper and just a guru with about 35-40 years of experience in space. So we’re really excited to offer that to our visitors and to families.”

Pink Elephants events will also be on hand all weekend to offer educational sessions about recycling and composting. Lumen Detroit will be open for the weekend offering its Spring menu and cocktails.

The Detroit Fine Artists Breakfast Club, a group of local artists, will share more than 40 pieces themed around sustainability and environmentalism with visitors. The art pieces are also for sale.

Polk says partnering with this group of artists brings an authenticity to the weekend.

“They’re responsible to help not only facilitate the event,” says Polk, “but help put together the jury of leaders who are looking at the pieces, to curate some of the pieces and then make sure that it’s well represented in the space. So we’re excited to partner with them and they’re just a great, great group based right here in Detroit.”

The Earth Day event hosted by DDP will conclude Sunday April 24th. The open-air Earth Day art festival continues Saturday Noon to 7pm and Sunday Noon to 5PM.
