Scottish electronic artist naafi has shared their new ‘UVA’ EP in full.
The producer has been making waves in the Scottish underground for a while now, credited as a co-writer on some of TAAHLIAH’s exceptional ‘Angelica’ EP, and cited for their work on Alliyah Enyo’s debut album.
Recently sharing solo cut ‘Magnolia’, it was clear from the off that naafi has something special. Born and brought up in Fife – their chosen artist name refers to the local shop on a Scottish housing estate – they blend a unique outlook with a depth of technical skill.
Describing their sound as “sparkly”, naafi ricochets between pristine digitalism and something more organic, and humane. New EP ‘UVA’ is out now and it makes for endlessly absorbing listening, the emotional flourish inherent in their work coming to the fore.
Closing with the wistful yet euphoric production work on ‘Ça Va’, it feels accessible but undeniably complex, with multiple listens required to pick apart their work.
“I think it’s actually quite hopeful,” says naafi of the EP. “Making this record was quite cathartic. It’s an introspective look into my childhood growing up on army estates and also subsequent periods of change in my life. I think I always felt a bit more comfortable being unsituated or not attached to being in a particular place – I still feel that now. I started making it toward the end of lockdown in that limbo period; spending a lot of time by myself reminded me of moving around when I was younger.”
Tune in now.
