Kaizer Chiefs’ interim coach, Cavin Johnson, has offered a unique perspective on the form of Colombian striker Jasond Gonzalez, who has struggled to make a significant impact since joining the club.

The 24-year-old’s arrival generated significant buzz and anticipation. However, after eight long months, the Colombian forward has yet to find the back of the net in any competitive match.

Despite being on the roster under both Molefi Ntseki and current coach Johnson, the player has seen limited action this season. His appearances include only four starts and eight substitute roles.

The club seems uninterested in exercising the option to buy Gonzalez permanently after his loan ends in June. Gonzalez is scheduled to return home at season’s end. Johnson, however, believes the Colombian “needs a little bit more time” to shine.

WHAT IS CAVIN JOHNSON’S SURPRISING ASSESSMENT OF JASOND GONZALEZ?

“You must leave that for the management to ask them. I work with him and he’s a quality player,” Johnson stated, initially deflecting questions about Gonzalez’s signing.

He went on to reveal how he believes adaptation is key for foreign players, saying, “Some players, especially South Americans… take a little bit longer than others to get to know the feel of the PSL or the feel of South African football.”

He urged patience with Gonzalez, suggesting an eight-month “orientation” period. Johnson pointed to Gonzalez’s contribution to the Chiefs’ win over Sekhukhune United. “He’s on the pitch and if you look at the run he makes, he makes the goal.”

He acknowledged the focus on goalscoring but remains confident in Gonzalez: “I think he’s a good player, he does well in training.” He emphasised that team selection is based on opposition analysis.

With only five matches remaining, time is running out for Gonzalez to showcase the abilities Johnson believes he possesses. Chiefs face their toughest test yet as they take on champions-in-waiting Mamelodi Sundowns in a Thursday evening [19h30] showdown at FNB Stadium.
