Fantastic Foxx’s double secures Indigenous win as unheralded half earns huge honour

The Indigenous All Stars have secured a hard-fought victory, beating out the Maori outfit 22-14 at the Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

Indigenous playmaker Braydon Trindall was crowned the 2024 Preston Campbell Medallist after recording two try assists in a complete display partnering Nicho Hynes.

Prior to the game, the Maori Haka and the Indigenous unity dance was labelled “stirring” by Fox League’s Dan Ginnane before the action commenced in front of a raucous crowd.

The Maori All Stars were the first to cross, with skipper Joseph Tapine barrelling his way over the line, bursting through multiple defenders to record first points.

Kodi Nikorima kicked the goal to take a 6-0 lead, but it didn’t take long for Latrell Mitchell’s side to hit back.

Three minutes later Josh Addo-Carr scored in the left corner, finishing off a smart backline play that left him completely unmarked.

It only took another 11 minutes for the Bulldogs flyer known as ‘The Foxx’ to score his second, scooping up a horror Jesse Arthars error that set up the four-pointer on a silver platter.

The Indigenous All Stars continued their dominance to close out the first half, with Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow getting his name on the scoresheet.

The Dolphins flyer finished off a pinpoint Braydon Trindall chip, grounding the ball only centimetres from the tryline in the relaxed fashion typical of the Queensland gun.

It took 51 minutes for the next four-pointer, with both teams struggling to complete their sets due to the rainy and wet conditions in Townsville.

Titans flyer Alofiana Khan-Pereira was the man to cross, flying onto a perfect Nicho Hynes pass in his All Stars debut.

Indigenous utility Bailey Biondi-Odo also delivered a “spectacular” try-saving tackle to close out the third quarter, dragging down Xavier Willison to stop an almost certain Maori try.

Xavier Willison scored with only seconds left on the clock, capping off an impressive display, but it wasn’t enough to get his side home.

Multiple players left the field injured at different stages in the clash, with Latrell Mitchell grabbing at a calf and Brandon Smith copping a head knock.

Jojo Fifita and Trindall also copped blows of their own and it remains to be seen whether they will be fit for Round 1.

The Indigenous All Stars have now defended their title, after breaking a three-year winning streak from the Maori side that spanned from 2020 to 2022.

The Indigenous vs Maori format began in 2019, and now both sides have lifted the trophy three times each, setting up a tasty clash in 2025.
