Eddie Vedder Compares Taylor Swift Fans to “Punk Crowds”
Millions of fans have attended Taylor Swift’s historic “TheEras Tour.” Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder was one of them, and he recently spoke about the experience, comparing Swift’s fans to the “punk rock crowds” of his youth.
The comments came in Pearl Jam’s new interview with Mojo, in which Vedder told a story about seeing the “Eras Tour” recently with his daughter. He recalled “the run-up to it, making friendship bracelets with her” and was amazed by “the generosity of these young girls and boys, trading these bracelets with different messages on them – lyrics, song titles, just acts of goodwill on these little bracelets. They had found their tribe; they were all agreeing on something.”

Continuing, Vedder said: “The craziest thing was it reminded me of punk rock crowds, of being aligned with all of the misfits in our town, back in the day. It was galvanizing and powerful…”

That’s where the sample of the interview on Mojo’s website ends, but the full story will be available in the magazine’s latest print edition.
Now, there’s probably something to be said about how many of the 20th century’s punks were “finding their tribe” in opposition to a prevailing status quo, whereas Swift and her widely-acclaimed best-selling concert tour of all time are basically the new status quo personified, but does that really matter?
The heart of what Vedder is saying is that Swift’s music is meaningful to its fans, and that’s a pretty neat thing, especially live in concert. If you’d like to join Swift’s tribe yourself, you’re in luck: “The Eras Tour” will return later this year with European and North American legs.
