Safe or not: Telegram responded to allegations of poor messenger protection

On December 27, we wrote that the founder of the Signal messenger criticized Telegram for allegedly poor protection of user data. They say even Facebook and WhatsApp are more confidential. Telegram was quick to answer.

One of the publications that published the words of the head of Signal, Moxie Marlinspike, was a resource about iXBT technologies. Subsequently, according to the editors, they received a small letter with a comment from the Telegram developers.

What they say in Telegram

The article states that Telegram stores user data in plain text. It is not true. Everything stored in the Telegram cloud is securely encrypted, – the representatives of the messenger commented in a letter.

Unfortunately, no specifics. In the comment, the developers did not explain exactly how they protect user data.

For another edition of iGuides, representatives of the application told the following: “The speech claims that government agencies can spy on Telegram users. This is not true. Telegram uses a distributed infrastructure with user data stored in multiple data centers around the world in various jurisdictions. The encryption keys that protect this data are never stored with the data. which they protect. Telegram currently has transferred 0 bytes of user data to third parties, including governments. “

How Telegram encrypts data

However, Telegram's encryption information is not secret. It is contained on the official website of the application.

• Thus, it is indicated that ordinary chats are encrypted by Pavel Durov's own method.

After Durov left the management of the social network VKontakte, the entrepreneur, together with his brother Nikolai Durov wrote his own code for data encryption, which formed the basis for Telegram.

• After that, chats and keys from them are split into several parts and sent to different servers in different countries.
• Secret chats use classic end-to-end p2p encryption. In this case, the correspondence is stored only on the devices of the interlocutors, and the server acts only as a transmitter.

Recall that Moxie Marlinspike stated that Telegram correspondence is stored on servers almost in the form of ordinary text files without any encryption.
