USB cable from BusKill is mean to protect the data privacy on your laptop if someone steals it. Here are all details.

Yes, you read that right! We are talking about a USB cable that can kill your laptop in an instant when removed from it. This is a custom USB magnetic breakaway cable manufactured by BusKill that has the sole purpose of safeguarding your data privacy in the event of a theft. The idea is simple: if someone steals your laptop, they are likely to disconnect the cable. This is where the cable comes in.

Once the cable is removed, it initiates a security program that instantly makes all the data cryptographic, which make the data is inaccessible to the malicious sources or thieves. This self destruct cable works with laptops running on Linux, Windows and macOS, and it only costs $59.

“Most people aren’t handling top-secret documents from whistleblowers and worried about the secret police knocking down their doors, but that’s the level of risk that I designed BusKill for. And I wanted it to be accessible to journalists who don’t necessarily use Linux and don’t know how to use the CLI [command line interface],” says Michael Altfield, the man who created BusKill.

Now note that on macOS and Windows, disconnecting the cable will only lock the device. All the rest of the shenanigans of a cyptographic data will be only accessible to Linux users, who can code and bake their self destructing mechanical.

Available via the crowdsourcing route, BusKill wants to expand the portfolio in the future. The project also plans to release triggers that shut down a computer when the magnetic cable is severed.

BussKill says that the cable is meant for journalists, activists and human rights defenders, who carry around confidential data on their laptops. The cable could also appeal to those who do cypto trading and store their data on the device.
